When you talk about your experiences (or important times in your life), use the Present Perfect tense (have + past participle). For example:
[鲜花]“I have never visited Peru.”
[鲜花]“I have been to New York three times.”
[鲜花] “Have you ever tried bungee-jumping?”
[鲜花]“No, but I’ve always wanted to!”
We use the Present Perfect to talk about things (actions or situations) which are important now (or which have a connection to the present).
For example, in the sentence “I have been to New York three times”, there is a connection to the present because I can still remember my trips to New York. Compare to the Past Simple
[鲜花]“I have been to New York.”
[鲜花]“I went to New York in 2012.”
In both sentences, the event is the same (I went to New York). But the focus is different. In “I have been to New York” it isn’t important when I went. The experience is important. In “I went to New York in 2012” the date (2012) is more important than the experience.
We often use the Past Simple with a time reference, such as “in 2012” or “two years ago”.
Speaking tip
Sometimes it can be difficult to know which tense to use when you are speaking. An easy way to remember is that when you give a date or time reference, use the Past Simple.
[鲜花]“Her parents went to Costa Rica last year.”
[鲜花]“He left University five years ago.”
[鲜花]“They got married in 2012.”
[鲜花]“She lived in Buenos Aires from 2002 to 2005.”
But when you talk about life experiences without a date, use the Present Perfect.
[鲜花]“I’ve never been to Peru.”
[鲜花]“She’s lived in five different countries.”
[鲜花]“He’s read all the books in the library.”
